Which MB do you have? The early white MBs could hold 4GB, but they could only access a little over 3GB of it. The later Santa Rosa white MBs could utilize the full 4GB. Not an issue if you have a unibody MB.

As for how much, it depends on your needs. If you just browse the web, email, etc, 2GB should be plenty. For more heavy-duty stuff (eg, photo editing, heavy multi-tasking, video work), you should add another GB or so.

I would go here and download the scanner. It will tell you how much and what type of RAM you need.

i hope this is relevant to the RAM issue. when you say spinning wheel of death, are you refering to the multi-coloured disc that replaces your cursor?

i have no idea why, but on my MBP, it appears like 50% of the time when im loading .gifs on safari. my MBP specs are shown just below my avatar.

Same Question

I'll be starting my freshman year at a University here shortly and intend on studying engineering.
I expect to be running some fairly heavy-duty programs for drafting and math (i.e. maple.)
I'm currently running a MBP 15.4" 2.66 GHz w/ 4gb mem.
Is an upgrade necessary or do you think I'll be ok?
THanks:D

The spinning beach ball is one of the sign of inadequate memory. For HD programs pop 8GB in.

And the spinning beach ball when accessing the internet can be a sign of several things: slow internet connection, slow server on the other end, downloading a large file (ex. some pdf's will lock Safari up while they download), etc.
