Loss of video / still image quality in iMovie

Hi. I have just started working with SD and HD (1080) video in iMovie. The program is very easy to use but the loss of adjustable volume from HD06 is a weakness. I am concerned about the loss of image quality which I did not expect with digital transfer.

I have selected under Preferences for full quality. When I play back the clips; the SD looks poor and the HD looks like SD when played from the HD camera ( a DV one) onto a TV directly. When I used to have a high-res Sony VAIO the clips were great as .m2t files

Also when importing stills from iPhotos into iMovie, the resolution is much lower than the original.

What can I do to maintain the quality of the original like on my VAIO?

I am using a 24" iMac at 1920 resolution.

Thanks
