• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Handbrake can do that, it has presets (see the presets window in the app) for ipod and ipod Touch / iPhone

There are many types of video files, but start with Handbrake as louishen suggested. Once converted, drag or import the file into iTunes.

To know about the video file, try to open in in QuickTime Player and press the command & I key to get information on the file codecs. The command key is the one with the Apple symbol on it. I mention this because there are some video files the Mac won't read, at least without some help from third party products such as Perian and Flip4Mac.

Spend the $40-some-odd-dollars and get QuickTime Pro. Very worth the full library of codecs. iPhone, iPod, Apple TV presets (the best around). More powerful and flexible than Handbrake (although hb is free). But the price of QT Pro is so worth it, you should really go that route. It'll give you the best quality for your iPhone/iPod devices.
