    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.

Editing software?

Basically, I'm looking into buying a Samsung MX20 camcorder, which is compatible with my Mac as long as I have updated versions of Quicktime and iMovie, or so Apple.com says. My main want is to be able to record, import, edit, and eventually upload to YouTube.

I'm looking for any editing softwares, preferably free or under $100, that I can use as an alternative to iMovie. I love the simplicity of iMovie, I just want to be able to produce higher resolution/quality video and be able to upload them. If you have any suggestions either camcorder wise (mac compatible) or solid editing softwares, PLEASE help me out. Thank you!

Your reason (to produce higher resolution/quality video) of moving from iMovie doesn't make sense to me. With iMovie you can edit and export 1080 video. At lease 1080i.

There are better encoders than Apple supplies, but they start at several hundred dollars and likely would require you to first export a super high quality and large file from your video editor.

I guess I can simplify this down.

I found my camcorder, and the software I'm gonna use (iMovie '08), but in order to edit, I need iMovie 7.1.4 or later, as to the instructions of Apple according to my specific camcorder. I have iMovie '08 version 7.0, and when I attempt to download, I get an error saying "An eligible iMovie application was not found in the location /Applications."

So my final question is, either how do I fix this problem, or will I be able to still edit my clips in iMovie HD? Thank you!

Click the Apple in the menu bar at the top of your screen then select "Software Update". It will check for any updates. If it doesn't show up there, you can download version 7.1.4 here.

Thank you!

I ended up having to use the Apple in the corner to update to 7.1, and the link to further update to 7.1.4. :)
