I'm pretty sure it tells you in the little booklet thingy you get but when I got my MBP 15" I simply plugged it in and turned it on. It stayed plugged in for at least 12 hours but was almost fully charged when I got it.

Based on the info I read, you should always use direct connect (AC) when possible.

so you mean it is best to plug it in to a power while using my MBP even when there is still power in my battery?

what im afraid is, will the battery get 'overcharged', if i leave it on say overnight or more than a certain number of hours? because this is the case with other electrical appliances or even laptops. overcharging damages the battery in one way or another.

Not too long ago someone (I forget who to give the credit to) posted a link to this info regarding charging macbooks/macbookpros.
As far as out of the box, it is ready to plug in and use as-is. No "pre-charging" necessary.

Most batteries only have so many charges in their lives before they have to be replaced. Apple claims that the battery in the new 17 inch mbp has 1000 charges in it. So just something to think about when you are too lazy to plug the charger in.

hmm okay means whenever im using my mac, i should plug it into the power source if possible? but is there a possiblity that there will be 'burnout' of either the battery or charger due to it being plugged into a power source for too long? cause i realise when i charge, the left of my macbook (near the magsafe charger) gets pretty hot.

Laptops are designed to safely run when plugged in. In fact all laptops have settings for how to manage resources when plugged in or on battery.

Just so you know. I got my 13" MBP yesterday. It came with about 70% of the battery already charged. But I plugged in my charger just because.
