Imovie 09 fails to import any video file i throw at it including mov files, i think i have the required codecs, perian,divx.

Is there something i am missing, or is imovie only any good good my camcorder?

What is the error you are getting? Perhaps open the Console.app found in the Utilities folder before trying to import and see if it reports any errors.

Have you tried the old stand-by, now, of repairing permissions by using the Disk Utility app?
