Macbook feature of swapping 4 fingers or command + Tab option???

Retina Macbook Pro 2014 model, 2.6 Ghz Core i5, 8 GB Ram and 256 GB SSD
When I enter the pop-up, which enables me to switch between different softwares and select safari, itunes or any of the own apple related software, the program appears on the screen whereas if I choose MSN, Adium or any other software then only the upper tile options and the name of the software appears but the main software doesn't pop-up. Why is that?
