Each time I need to install a new application, I'd drag the .dmg file to the Application folder, and double click and execute from there. After the program is installed, I suspect that the .dmg file stays put in my folder, and occupy hard disk space. Can I delete the source file/package after installation?

Besides, some application appear as being "mounted", where I have to "eject" it to close the program. Why so, but not all?

ThaX has it right - do not drag the dmg's to the app folder.

Open the dmg, run the installer for those that have it, drag the app itself after opening the dmg to the app folder. Then you can delete the dmg.

So...

Any of the ones you have that used an installer, you can go ahead and delete the dmg.

Those that you are still opening the dmg, you need to open, drag the app icon to the app folder, eject the dmg, then you can delete the dmg.
