I have an Imac that's about one year old.

Why can't I 'add' files to a dvd-rw ?

I'm 99 % certain I was able to do this on xp, although I was using a cd-rw for backup instead of dvd.

I'm also certain that I 'burned' the cd each time after adding files, and would still be able to add more later, without having to erase the existing files.

I'd go ahead & try a cd-rw, but I have no way of getting one until Monday at the earliest.

Hoping someone has input.

Thanks in advance!

You're asking about "multi-session" writing. You can do multi-session writing with CD RW media in OS X, however, multi-session writing is not supported for DVD RW media. Many folks have asked the same question. This is one area where Windows is ahead. Perhaps we'll see multi-session writing supported with the release of Snow Leopard???

Thanks for the reply chscag

Last night I bought a 10 pack of Verbatim 4x 700 mb cd-rw's
Unfortunatly, the results are the same as they were
with the dvd!!

I can 'burn' pictures to the cd, but am not allowed to add pics later.

I know the cd isn't full, because after burning, it's total
was 577 megabytes.

When I was using xp and wanted to add/burn a file/folder
I would right click & choose 'send to' cd drive.

With my mac, I highlight the item(s) I want to add/burn, & click on file &
choose 'burn to disc'

Maybe this is where I'm doing it wrong, maybe there's an option other
than 'burn to disc'

Would really appreciate any/all help.

Thanks!

Just out of curiosity, what version of OSX do you have?

I only ask as it seems that different versions of OSX have different methods of doing it.

I know you said your imac is about a year old, but depending on when you bought it and whether you bought it new, used, new-old-stock, etc. I wasn't sure which version of osx you currently have.

I dug around my mac & found the following in the help section.

Recording on a recordable CD more than once
Normally, you can burn items to a recordable CD, such as a CD-R or CD-RW, only one time. However, if you use Disk Utility to burn the disc, you can burn items to a disk in more than one session as long as space is available. This is also called multisession burning.

To burn to a recordable CD so you can burn to it again:

In Disk Utility, create a disk image that contains the files you want to burn to the disc.

The files must be from a volume with a Mac OS Extended disk format. To check a volume’s disk format, select the disk in Disk Utility, and look at the information at the bottom of the Disk Utility window.

Select the disk image in the Disk Utility list, and then choose Images > Burn.

Select the “Leave disc appendable” checkbox. If you don’t see this option, click the triangle in the top-right corner.

Insert a blank recordable CD in the optical drive and click Burn.

To add more files to the disc later, follow the steps above. You can continue this process until all available space on the disc is used.

I've tried this several time with zero success.
For instance I don't see any checkbox with a 'leave disc appendable' option.

Not sure if this makes a difference, but I store all of my pics in assorted
folders in the 'my pictures' area.

Hopefully this additional info I provided will help.

Thanks!

Steve

Something is not right. As I replied to you previously, you can not multi-session write to a DVD RW or R, however, multi-session recording is supported for both CDR and CDRW media.

From your recent post, it seems as if you're going about it correctly except you have no option available to "Leave the disk appendable".

Suggest downloading the free "Burn" application and try using it instead of Disk Utility. Report back with the results. Link

Regards.

"Suggest downloading the free "Burn" application and try using it instead of Disk Utility. Report back with the results.

Results

I downloaded & installed "Burn"
Then put in a Verbatim 4x CD-RW 700 MB
& selected "Burn" as the disc application.

Selected folders I wanted to burn.
Total size of folders: 598 MB

Clicked the burn button to start the burn :)

A box with the following then pops up.

BURN DISC IN: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-875

SPEED: MAX. POSSIBLE 4X

Then there's 2 check boxes:

ERASES DISC BEFORE BURNING

ALLOW MORE SESSIONS

I check only the 'ALLOW MORE SESSIONS' box & begin burning.

Burn goes fine, but when I insert the disc later, I'm not able to add images.
I right click and look at disc 'info'

Capacity 597.3 MB
Available Zero MB
Used 597.3

I really thought I had this resolved when the 'Allow More Sessions' box came up
but I'm right back where I started.

Appreciate the help though!

Would really, really appreciate any suggestions.

If you checked the "Allow More Sessions" box the disk should have been left open and available for another session provided there was enough room for the session and to write the TOC.

How large are the images you're trying to add to the disk? Remember, you've already used around 598 MB of a possible 700 MB capacity, and you need room for the TOC. Besides that, multi-session writing always results in wasted space on the disk.

I'm just wondering if perhaps the reason you can't additionally write to the disk is because the program (Burn or Disk Utility) has determined there is not enough space.

Try doing a multi-session write with some test data but leave more space available for the next burn and see what happens.

Thanks for the suggestion Chscag.

I tried rewriting after only burning 10 mb's onto the disc the first session.
No go!

I have one more question:

When the burn window pops up, there's 4 choices.

DATA
AUDIO
VIDEO
COPY

Apparently DATA is the default, because it always checked/pushed & I have never tried the other 3.

Could this be the reason for the issue I'm having ?

I have one more CD-RW left, I'm going to try the audio setting & see what happens.

Thanks!
