Multiple part question

I might have posted something to the upcoming first question but I don't think I did.

1) Why is it that on a full charge, the hours remaining sometimes starts in the 4 range and then to 2 and then 3? What's up with this fluctuation? What are some of the best settings for your battery life? Does anybody recommend downloading coconutBattery?

2) On a full charge, am I better off keeping the charging cord in or removing it after the full charge?

3) What are some downloads I should dl from the download link from the Apple website for my new Macbook? ( e.g. important downloads )
