What is the point of a firmware password?

2.16GHz C2D MacBook w/ 2GB RAM & 120GB HD. HTC Droid Incredible.
I believe it does not allow the computer to boot.

As eric pointed out, it prevents booting the machine in certain instances. Please refer to the following Apple KB article and read exactly what setting a firmware password does. Link

Having a firmware password set is a great security feature. Just don't forget what it is!
