Applecare Protection Plan now, or in a year?

Hi all, I'm currently waiting for a 17" Unibody MBP to arrive from China, and have been reading up on the Applecare Protection Plan. Now it appears that some people suggest to wait a year (or just under) to purchase it, because, they claim, it'll extend your coverage to four years.

Is this actually true? Does the 1 year warranty provided with every new mac give you the same worldwide repair coverage that the Protection Plan does?

Note: I'm not talking about telephone support, I'll be ok switching from windows, just the labour and parts costs of any possible repair.

Many thanks!

you will not have access to phone support after 90 days unless you purchase the applecare.
