playing video in iMovie

okay so i got some video footage on my cell phone and i bluetoothed it to my mac and it went in under downloads and opens in quicktime but i want to put it in a video im making on iMovie but it won't drag over to it so my question is that i wanna know how i can import video clips to iMovie?

2011 MBP, i7, 16GB RAM, MBP 2.16Ghz Core Duo, 2GB ram, Dual 867Mhz MDD, 1.75GB ram, ATI 9800 Pro vid
I would open it in QuickTime and do a get Info on it and figure out what video and audio codecs are being used. Then I'd find a conversion utility (discussed ofter here) and convert it to something friendly to iMovie.
