I came upon a similar story in a magazine my friend got from the CES convention. To summarize, Apple essentially is driving their independent retailers out of business by expanding their Apple corporate stores across America. However, the independent Apple resellers that have been able to survive cater to a different consumer segment, i.e high end users rather than consumers. The shame of this to me is that many of these Apple resellers have stuck through with Apple since the beginning and have continually dealt with slimmer margins that Apple hardware offer. Trust me I know b/c i tried to get a hookup from a friend and he told me how slim the profit margins on ibooks are. It's sad how corporate America is squeezing out the smaller guys.

I've always thought what Apple was doing to the small guy was wrong and still do.

It isn't only happening in America as I have heard similar stories here in Holland of companies that are no longer prepared to sell Apple computers as the profit margins are too slim.
I've also noticed that the prices for Apple computers are always the same. This is something thats a good thing really. lets face it, their is nothing more annoying than buying a product and then the next day looking in the paper and finding it standing their at a different shop for half the price.

It's sad really because Apple really has survived through the support it has received from its strong cult following as well as the support of their resellers. To really phase them out like Apple is doing with their corporate stores is very sad indeed. I do agree that the strength of Apple is their control over their prices and its marketing. But @ the same time to make their resellers wait weeks for product? Disgusting! But business is always business.
