Apple realized that they needed Steve Jobs to drive the company. He may be a crazy jerk sometimes, but he's the guy that makes Apple a profitable company.

Imagine what computing would be like if Apple had bought Be, Inc. (with Jean-Louis Gassee, another ex-Apple employee) instead of NeXT Computers...
