External HD reccomendations

So, I have one foot in the past (Emac 30 gig HD bought 5yrs ago) and one foot in the more recent past (Macbook w/ time machine)

Any Recommendations on external hard drive for both?

Since my Emac has USB1, and can't connect a n EHD to that. how do I determine if I have firewire 400 or 800? Does it matter?

According to MacTracker your eMac has FW 400 ports and USB (older 1.1) ports. It would be best to purchase an external hard drive that can connect via FW. That would allow you to use it for both the eMac and your MacBook. I'm assuming here that you own a MacBook with a FW port. Newer aluminum Macbook does not have FW.
