Trashing .DMG

When you install an application, there are these dmgs that stay on your computer after you install the particular ap. Can I trash these things?

yep, after it's installed theres no need for it. the .dmg is just a disk image for the installer.

Let me see if I get this straight as a soon to be new mac user:

Download say a Firefox DMG - Drag firefox.app to apps folder - delete DMG.

That's all there is to it? I've read it a few times a few different ways, still cannot understand how it's so freakin' easy!

Yes that is correct and most will install to apps folder automatically so you don't even have to drag to it, just trash the DMG.

Always worth backing the dmg's up to a cd or dvd when you have enough of them to save you downloading them again in case of a ard drive failure or you change your Mac...

except for things like firefox, thunderbird etc where there's likely to be an update... heck with broadband.. I don't bother with most apps, they're downloaded in under a minute or two anyway.

think of dmg's as zips.. or a technically more accurate comparison.. iso's.
