I like to see which applications are open at a glance. Is this possible with the mac? I'm running 10.5 if that matters.

If not, how do you know how many and what applications are open at a glance?

The dock is your task bar, the little arrow under an icon denotes that it is open.

Also, Command-Tab will show you. It's really the method for switching applications, but if you continue to hold down Command after pressing it, the graphic will stay on the screen. You can then keep pressing Tab to cycle through your applications.

expose (and hot corners) is a nice way to see what you've got open too. for example, i've got my lower right corner set to show all open windows so i can then just click what i want to bring to the front with two quick motions.
