Can I make a document so you need a password to access it? I've got pages btw.

Not that I have been able to find.

I think that Apple is relying in the password protection of the OS. I don't know how that helps if you have documents stored in a backup HD, though.

You can create an encrypted disk image using Disk Utility and drop your files into that.
