a question about time machine...

If I setup time machine with a macbook pro and if I purchased a new iMac, could I use my time machine backup from the macbook and restore it onto the iMac? I guess what I'm asking is if you can mix and match different types of Apple computers with a single time machine backup or does it have to be the same type of computer? Another example, could I use a time machine backup from a macbook and restore a Mac Pro with it?
