best practices/recommendations for buying a FAST external hardrive for iMac

Any best practices/recommendations for buying a FAST external hardrive for use as a scratch disk (reading/writing) while editing in Final Cut Pro2 on an iMac?

I've read that an ultra scsi external drive would be optimum so any thoughts on a firewire to scsi adapter?

It would still be limited to the throughput speed of the firewire.
