External HD for videos

i want to back up my imac HD (music, school files, etc.) on my maxtor 500GB external HD, then transfer all of my movies, tv shows and videos, onto my External HD and off of my imac. how would i partitian my external to do that?
if theres a better way to do this , i'm open for suggestions, i just dont want to clutter my imac HD with all my videos.

If you're only going to use the external hard drive to copy videos, music, and TV shows, partition it as one single partition and use HFS+ as the format.

You can also use the external to make Time Machine backups or a backup using another program. In that scenario, it would be best to divide the external into two partitions. One partition for backups, the other to copy all your videos, music, and TV shows. Again, it's best to use HFS+ as the format.
