iTunes: 2 Files for each video? Is there a better way?

MBP 2.5 Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 667 MHz DDR2, 17" Hi-Res Display ; iPhone 3G 2.1
I like to keep all my movies and video files in iTunes, so i can sync them with my AppleTv or iPhone. The problem is i have one large copy for use with AppleTV and a smaller copy for use with my iPhone. Ive tried just copying my larger movies to my iPhone but it copies them at full size. Is there a way to keep just one large copy of my movies in itunes and then have it downsize it when i transfer it to my iPhone?

It would be very cool if you could... This issue has always bothered me, and now that you can get HD TV shows, it's almost impossible to keep the SD and HD versions in sync.

I think in the next 2 - 3 years, CPUs might be quick enough to make videos smaller in real time as they transfer to your portable device; but currently to go from full screen to portable size, can take hours with a long movie. So the short answer is, no, what you're asking is not currently possible.
