I'm in the market for a camcorder. I know absolutely nothing about them, so this will be my first. Just by looking at the reviews on cnet's website, I noticed that Sony and Canon seem to be the best. I'm looking for a camcorder that will give me the best raw footage and a great zoom. This camcorder will be used for home videos, so nothing professional. I'm looking to spend between $400-800, big gap, I know. I did look at the latest thread that has already addressed this issue, but I just want to see, if any opinions have changed since then. Could anybody give me any input on which models of camcorders I should look at? And where can I go to for a type of dummies guide for learning about camcorders online?

I have a Canon, which works very well in natural light situations. Whatever you choose, make sure you get a camera with a firewire port. If it is a Canon or a Sony, then you should have no problem. I believe that most miniDV cameras have firewire ports.
