I am trying to partition my external hard drive without erasing it. However, I don't see those ripples in the bottom left hand of the rectangle. Here is a screen shot:

Don't think disk utility can resize FAT32 partitions on the fly.

The disk looks as though it's empty.

Why don't you want to erase and partition?

Unfortunately its not empty, I have about 150 gigs used and I want to partition this hard drive so that I can use Time Machine. What do you mean "on the fly?" Can't I just create another partition without erasing my drive?

the reason I thought it was empty was your screen shot. It shows a 465 gb partition with 465 gb free.

That aside disk utility cannot resize/create non-hfs partitions without erasing the disk first. Ie on-the-fly

Others may know of free tools but iPartition ($50) can do what you want.
