HALP! can't eject external HD

it says it is in use and cannot be ejected, close apps and try again

i do this, it won't work



what could be the possible causes for this?

what could i try to do to fix this?

You can just unplug the drive. The odds of anything bad happening are slim to none.

Try re-booting the system before you attempt to unplug the drive. As you've been told, unplugging the drive anyway probably won't do any harm, but just to make sure.... try the reboot first.

Yep, definitely reboot the system. Something is probably just hung up.

Stick your finger on the power button until the machine shuts down. Pull the lead out, then switch it all back on.
