My 12-year-old was just given an ibook running version 10.2.1 with iMovie. He's trying to edit some skateboard footage that is on a DVD. But we can't seem to import the DVD, which is on the desktop. It doesn't show up in the Import File window, even though it's clearly sitting right on the desktop.

What do I do to get iMovie to recognize the DVD as an importable file?

Suggestions anyone?

if it is a commercial dvd then it is against the law to take it off.

if it is a homemade dvd then you can probably convert it (assuming it's video_ts in the dvd) using handbrake http://handbrake.fr/ and make it .avi, or .mp4 or something imovie can recognize.

Handbrake is the tool of choice for removing video from playable DVD's. If the DVD is simply a data dvd (not intended to be played in, say, a dvd player), then the issue is one of file format, I would think. Which is your situation?
