Snap to Desktop?

In OSX is there any way to snap to the desktop instantly as you can using the button in the Quicklaunch bar in Windows 98/2000/XP? I would think this should be a fairly standard function, but I'll be ****ed if I can find it.

I don't know about OS X before Panther, but in Panther (10.3) just press F11. All your windows will disappear to the 4 edges of the screen, and your desktop shows. To make them come back, press F11 again. It's one of the 3 Exposé features (which is one of the major new features of Panther).
