I just moved into a residential college and I found that there are many other computers in the "shared" network. I'm rather paranoid about stuff like what they can do with my computer on the shared network and also privacy issues, so is it possible for my computer to be "invisible" to others in the network?

System Preferences, then uncheck File Sharing. Then you're good to go!

Also, if your extra paranoid you can use the file vault to encrypt all of your files. This can be found in Apple>System Pref's>Security.

Yet another option to put your mind at ease is to click on the firewall tab in that same window click on advanced and then enable stealth mode so that no other computers can see you.

See attachment if you need to.
