Sending Mail goes slowly

Your Mac's Specs
20" alum iMac 2.4 3 gigs ram
I tried to post this in the "mail forum" but it says I have to log in with my apple ID which I don't or don't think I have nor a way to get it. But anyway my question is why when I click to send an email whether just text or photo sometimes it takes a full minute to send and sometimes it goes out instantly. I'm satisfied that it goes out but why does it take a minute to do so at times? The URL for the mail forum http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1223 How do I get an Apple ID so I can post into that forum?
