im so new to the whole mac thing and photoshop, please help with these questions.

I just opened a new page, (500 x 200 )

Its blank, the background layer is locked. I try to use brushes on it and nothing will show on the banner im making.

Why is nothing showing? Do i need to create a new layer?

( i tried to create a new layer, but it wont let me )

I have CS3 extended on my MBP also, and i'm following what you're doing right now, create a blank document at 500x200 pixels, the background is locked, but when i create a new layer, it lets me no problem. And i can use my brushes on it too. Make sure you have the background highlighted when you use the paintbrushes.

I think.... and I think...

That you might be trying to brush on a background with the same color for your brush..

Check the background color. If it's white, and your brush is white, your not going to see it...

Click on the colors located in the toolbar.

Then you can select the color you want.

To reset back to Black and White, just hit the D key on your keyboard...

the toolbar on the right? I clicked on a color then hit on my banner, it is still black and white colors. When i click it, it just turns to a different shade of black and white. I tried this with colors and whatever swashes are?

You might be working in a grayscale document.

Open a new document, then under the color mode, select RGB.

When inside of a document, go to Image - Mode - RGB.

Swatches are quick pre-made color templates/blending templates.

The toolbar on the left is where the foreground and background colors are located. It's the one with all the different icons (i.e. brushes, crop, marquee, pen, eraser, etc' etc')

Ok thank you guys so much.

Probably my last question: can you rotate brushes?

Yes.

Get your brush out, then hit F5 or go to Window - Brushes.

Then choose the brush if you haven't already, and in the Brush Tip Shape list link, move the Angled Crosshair/Angles until you get the desired angle.
