OS X only auto defrags files under a certain size. Based on what I've read on the matter and from personal experience, you'll benefit from defragging if you tend to work with a lot of large files, or perhaps are the type of person who frequently tries out a lot of software (and, in turn, frequently deletes what one doesn't like after trying). For a more casual user who rarely downloads large files and mostly just surfs the Net, writes some emails, and play the occasional game, a defragger likely won't show a substantial benefit.
