I have a Sony Hard Drive video recorder and the problem is the file does not want to play on my mac. I was wondering if there is a program out there that changes the format

.mpg and .avi are the file types i know off hand that iMovie will accept

mpg plays fine on my mac in quicktime pro

other apps you might want to try to view/convert it in are (in no particular order);

VLC
Visual hub
ffmpegx

and many more

I have ran into some MPG's that will not play. What worked for me with a lot of different video formats was to download and install Perian. It will allow Quicktime to play many different formats. Give it a try. Not sure with your mpg's from your camera, but worth a try.
