At a YR 11 (aged 16) school prom.

I am DJ'ing for a 40-60 min session and although I have a basic idea of what everyone likes I would like your opinion. More dancy or club music or a more subtle and less in the face music. Any suggestions for certain songs or artists.

Thanks !

Dance, hip-hop...

Avoid 'pop' songs or slow songs. Try to keep a fairly continuous beat. However, try to hit the more popular hip-hop songs, like 'Soldier Boy' or Kanye West.

Trust me, nobody likes listening to music that they can not dance to at Prom. You might not like the music, but it is what people expect at a dance.

you have to decide for everyone,So vary it. Rock, Pop,Hip-hop, don't just go down to one genre because that's what ruins it for people, that you don't play stuff they like.

So be varied. =]

That is getting into iffy territory. Often, people that age want to hear what they know and are familiar with. However, they may react favorably to it.

Perhaps you can try a song and see what happens and have some more lined up in case they like it?

Yeah i wouldn't mind getting a mosh pit going !

I may try like a well known drum n bass song and then if it goes down well i could explore other songs in that genre.

Thank you for the advice on keeping it varied as well.

Any other suggestions are very welcome

I think Hip-hop is a safe bet in the US at least... But Europeans have a different taste than Americans do. I've seen many dance floors thin out to unfamiliar songs such as electronic songs, which saddens me, cause I love it. :)

I'd also agree with cheesybanana. But I'm just going to say Dance, cause I'm not a fan of Hip-hop. :(

If you are DJ'ing for the electronic crowd, you can't go wrong with it. They aren't picky. Trance, techno, jungle, progressive, progressive trance (favorite), house, etc.

i would also advise play nothing that could be considered edgy or explicit as many times the teachers and chaperons tend to look down on that.

Wow thank you louishen. Just what I need, a long list. Any more suggestions from anyone are greatly appreciated.

And

Sanity1082 I also have experienced it when teachers hate explicit songs ! ahah, but towards the end of the prom when im on they are relaxed, so i'll see.

Thanks again.

I hate it when theres no music to dance to at parties. its inconsistent!
