Are we talking ethernet or wireless? Through a router or straight to the modem? Dial-up or broadband?

Hi all,

I have the same problem, can't connect to update OS X through wireless to my cable modem. I click on the Apple and Software Update and it always fails. I have all my sharing wide open. What else should I try? I'm going to apple.com directly to get my updates, which is OK but obviously I have a connect problem somewhere.

Thanks, Noel

I don't understand the problem from the information supplied so far.

Is your Mac connected to the internet at all? Do you have a Windows box that *is* connected to the Internet via a cable modem? Is that connection a wired connection or a wireless connection?

It sounds like you are trying to achieve a WiFi connect to the internet via your cable modem? Does your cable modem support WiFi? If so, is it's WiFi enabled?

Can you achieve a wired connection from your Mac to your cable modem (you may need this in order to enable its WiFi if it is not presently enabled)?

Please post a few more details of your configuration and what you are trying to accomplish. I am sure that it is soluable!

mac57,

About my question (as opposed to krish's), I do have a good connection to the internet with my Mac via Airport wireless directly to my Verizon cable modem's antenna. I also have 2 PCs connected to that modem by wired LAN's (motherboard to modem). My Mac is in a local network with my 2 PCs, therefore 2 are wired and 1 is wireless. I can communicate 2 ways with either PC and directly to the internet as well if they are both shut down. I use Firefox from my Macbook all the time without any problems. But trying to connect from the "Apple" on the menu bar to do updates just doesn't work...

This may seem confusing, but I don't see why I can't use the Mac Apple menu to do the updates... I have my sharing set to allow 2 way communication with either the PCs or the modem.

So, forgetting about the PCs for a moment, because I am not sure they are relevant to the problem at hand, you have a clean WiFi connection from your Mac to your router. It works well, as evidenced by your ability to browse the web on Firefox, but you can't get Software Update to work when you select it from the Apple menu. Is this a clear summary? Do we need to confuse the picture at all by including the PCs in this description? It would appear that they are just two other devices on the same subnet with you.

If you go to your System Preferences, select Software Update, and run that, can it connect? I am guessing a firewall problem here... Does it make any difference whether the PCs are on or off (I doubt it, but I thought I would check just to be sure)?

mac57,

Your summary was spot on... I went to System preferences and tried the update, got exactly the same response as from the Apple menu. It timed out and asked if I wanted to go through Net Diagnostics, etc. I tried that yesterday and it led me down an alley I eventually backed out of...

I only discussed the PCs because they are a part of my local net and thought they might be relevant to your analysis, but apparently they aren't.

I doesn't seem to make any difference with PCs running or shut down (just tried it with both PCs shut down).

You're probably right about the firewall...I have it set to allow all incoming connections and in the box, File Sharing (AFP, SMB). Any ideas?

This may be nothing and a little outdated, but could this article be relevant?

Firstly, if you haven't already done so, go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility/Repair Disk Permisssions.

If this does not work, try creating a new user and trying software update through this user. If this works then the problem lies in your personal account (I.E. A preference file may be corrupt and need deleting, or something equally trivial)

Soulwar, that looks like the answer... it needs a password and that process (on the Apple Menu) doesn't go that route! So the answer is for me to go directly to Apple for updates, which I did for 10.5.3, and THAT does work... Thanks!

shfle, Thanks to you also. I use MainMenu every day to do that, but will try Disk Utility directly, see if that makes any difference

According to a previous post on a different thread, krish858 has an illegal installation of OS X on non-Apple hardware, therefore this thread is being closed. Thanks to all who attempted to assist.

Noels: If you need additional assistance, please start a new thread. Thanks.
