Help with installing things downloaded?

macbook l Ipod nano 4gb l ipod classic 80 gb
I downloaded the windows media player for mac OS X from the internet and it's in my downloads stack, I click on it to try to install it but it only opens in textedit. How do I install it?

What is the file extension for the program? did you download the dmg, or what exactly did you download?
