Help with installing things downloaded?

I downloaded the windows media player for mac OS X from the internet and it's in my downloads stack, I click on it to try to install it but it only opens in textedit. How do I install it?

What is the file extension for the program? did you download the dmg, or what exactly did you download?

Just to let you know, Windows Media Player isn't supported anymore and they haven't updated it in years. You should get Flip4Mac instead.

And VLC Player.

And DivX Player.

It's worth having everything there for when you get an awkward video file.
