very quick question about hard drive icon

I feel pretty dumb not being able to figure this out...but it's kinda driving me crazy. how can I get rid of the hard drive icon on the desktop? I have Leopard if that helps

Go to Finder> Preferences> General.

iMac Core i5(3.6 GHz) 8 GB RAM, MBP C2Duo(2.4 GHz) 4 GB RAM, MB C2Duo(2.4 GHz) 2 GB RAM
That hard drive is supposed to be there, its the mac equivalent of the computer icon in windows. I suppose you might be able to eject it by dragging it to your recycling bin, but I'm not sure what that would do to your computer. It might be harmful. Maybe someone else has more info...
