• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I just bought a new iMac, my first Apple ever owned, and I need a little help regarding iMovie.

Is there anyway to import videos that you've downloaded off the internet? Or are you just allowed to import stuff from like cameras?

iMovie can load many different file formats. So the answer is; depends on the file (codec).

If what you are downloading isn't compatible, converting and using add on codecs has been mentioned in this forum. Performing a search will likely give you the answer you need.

Well I have this Quicktime video file I downloaded, where do I go about to getting it in iMovie? I've read/watched all of iMovie's tutorials on importing, but they just talk about importing from devices.

I'll assume iMovie 08.

File-->Import Movies...

Play with it to learn it.

This is explained in the "Other ways to import videos" tutorial. Watch the entire thing. Also try using the Help menu item.
