Leopard with backup disks?

Fairly new to Macs, I made the mistake of buying my iMac weeks before leopard came out. My question is a friend of mine recently purchased one of their own, is it possible to upgrade to leopard with their backup disks?O:)

If it's the same make and model, then it's certainly possible. Is it legal? Definitely not.
