After effects and iMovie HD problem

I have 2 problems.
In after effects, sometimes when I add a video and add an effect from my Action Movie Essentials pack, it makes the movie really jittery, it shows one frame for like the whole film, except in some bits where it shows another, and its really annoying as i have to reload the file again and again.
and in iMovie HD, sometimes when I cut part of a clip, it freezes for like 4 seconds, then shuts down. Its always random and unexpected.
HELP :(
