Sorry to be obtuse, but could someone explain hgow to record a video clip with sound using the iSight camera ans built-in microphone on iMovie?

File -> Import from camera

(make sure the drop-down bottom left of the window that appears is set to isight camera)

Press the capture button and away you go!
