imovie 08 an Final Cut express 4 wont recognize my video camera...

When I used the version of imovie that came with my laptop it picked it up without messing with any of the settings. Now when I connect my cam via usb neither program will pick it up...
here is my specs

Video camera
Sony Handycam 20x optical zoom DCR-HC26

My laptop
Osx 10.4.11
2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
