• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Bad Output on DVD made with iMovie08

I recently purchased the MacBookPro with the iLife08 package that contained iMovie08. My only reason to purchase the Apple was its reputation for easier and better video editing program compared to the Window based programs I was using before for the past ten years. I have taken one-to-one lessons from Apple and after many hours of editing, etc. I produced a couple of DVDs. Both of them look a little fuzzy on my HDTV. I recall that I had produced a DVD eight years ago with a simple MyDVD program, using the same material, so I played that on my HDTV and the picture was crisp, sharp, and more vibrant than the one made with iMovie08. After surfing the Apple's user forum, I noticed that many other people have experienced the same problem. The consensus seems that the earlier iMovie06 was a better program than iMovie08 and did produce DVDs without loss of definition. I tried a small piece with iMovie HD 6.0.4 and made a DVD which turned out to be as sharp as the one I had with the Windows. Has any one else experienced this situation, and if so has anyone come up with a solution using the iMovie08 program?

I believe that most people will tell that iMovie '08 is been too dumb now and that iMovie HD is better. I looked at iMovie '08 and did not like and I switched back to iMovie HD for my simple stuff.

How are you exporting the file for use in iDVD?

If you are using "Media Browser..." or "Export Movie..." then your options are limited and you would likely want to try one of the two larger sizes. These options have preset options that may not be the best for DVD production. The big issue looks like the bit rate might be too low.

You might try a manual advanced ("Export using QuickTime...") export. Check out my iMovie Export Guide for more information.

Have just recently purchased a new mac and have experienced the same issues. Have you tried the I movie export guide and was it successful?
