It was supposed to be in Sheratons and other big hotels by the end of 2007 and for retail and what not... it seems to have dropped of the face of the earth, the site hasn't been updated in years, not a thing has been said about it and I haven't seen it anywhere! What happened? Could Microsoft just not pull it off?

That's just the way MS does things. They are the exact opposite of Apple. They introduce concepts that are far ahead of their time and usually based on technology and capability that doesn't yet exist. Sometimes it's more of a "what if" to get people to think ahead. A few years back Gates debuted a concept work desk that was similar to this but much better. It was larger and angled kind of like a architect easel I think. And the ideas and uses he talked about for it was much better. It was basically a virtual desktop that was exactly like a real desktop and much more functional than Surface.

Honestly, I don't see this to be worth anything unless they change the concept drastically. The idea of a horizontal table-like computer has no appeal to me no matter what it does.

Here's a more recent article if you're interested.
