"Convert selection to mp3" error

Whenever I try to convert an aiff file to mp3 with the "convert selection to mp3" option in iTunes it gives me this error:

Error occurred while converting the file "song name". The disk could not be read from or written to.

Have any ideas on how to fix this, or any freeware apps that can do it too?
