First off you need to decide on what you are going to hook it up to. Then you need to look at what kind of input the device takes. If you go with a macbook, all it has is a mini dvi, but you can get a generic connector to go to vga, dvi, etc. You also want to keep in mind that the macbook may not be able to support the resolution and screen size that you want.

I am running a samsung 220wm at 1050x 1600ish through a mini-dvi to dvi connector and it works fine. I am spanning them but you could mirror it just the same.

Kinda on same topic... my brother hooked his gateway laptop to our 56inch TV and played WoW with extended desktop. It has a blue (VGA?) plug in the back, does the video card on the MBP allow for that to work? Extending the desktop to another screen that is 56"?

The MacBook can support up to 2048*1536 in theory. I have a 20 inch external that runs 1680 * 1050 and things like expose etc can slow down a lot when driving 2 screens on an extended desktop. Remember that 1280*800 plus 1680*1050 is a lot of pixels for something like the GMA950

Actually, Zoolook, the regular Macbook can only support an external resolution of 1920x1200, and the Macbook Pro can support an external resolution of 2560x1600. It's the iMac that supports an external resolution of 2048x1536. And those resolutions are for the external monitor only, not the total including the laptop's screen.

Avenged, check the back of the TV or its documentation to see which connections you have, DVI, VGA, or both. That way you can buy the correct mini-DVI adapter.

This is what I posted for somebody else a while ago regarding a similar question (The Macbook will work with your TV fine by the way):-

You could do that but remember VGA is analogue.

If you want to connect directly to the HDMI port you will need:-

One of these

plus one of these

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000OOMRKS/ 97&sr=8-4

and one of these to transfer sound (You would also need one if you go the VGA route), although you will probably already have one of these kicking around somewhere.

Yea, I've had my Macbook power a 50" plasma, so a 40" should be no problem :D

Looks really good. Kind of like a giant monitor. Oh, and I'm using the VGA connector (TV doesn't have DVI)

If you're buying new, then yes, all of the Macbooks have the same video card and will then have the same quality.

As long as your TV has an HDMI input doesn't need to have a DVI input, just buy a cheap DVI to HDMI cable (Don't fall for the expensive cables as with digital (DVI/HDMI) you will not see a jot of difference in picture quality, regardless of cost).

Also, as full HD is only 1920 x 1080 pixels there is no way your TV will have an higher resolution than this.

If you want close the lid on your Macbook when attached to the TV you'll need to attach a mouse or mouse and keyboard to it (To wake from sleep)
