I just bought a external FAT32 drive. Will I gain any benifits if I format it to HFS+?

Absolutely yes. Besides HFS+ being OS X's native file system, FAT32 is generally an awful file system subject to all kinds of errors and shortcomings.

And Time Machine will not back up to a FAT32 drive.
And you cannot save any files larger than 4GB on FAT32.

HFS+ is required if you want to store some types of files (Like Keynote, Pages, or OmniOutliner files, or an iPhoto library.)
However, you will no longer be able to take your drive to a Windows machine, or access it from Boot Camp.
