I am reasonable certain the Verizon is a CDMA service, meaning he iphone is not compatible.

That is right. The only other company at the time, that I'm aware of, you can use the unlocked iPhone with is T-mobile because they use the same type of network, and for the most part the same towers. But if you can wait Verizon announced that they will "unlock" their service to allow any other phone from any other carrier to be used on their network, but you will have to wait till mid-2008.

Article << It is actually pretty interesting, unheard of for U.S. markets though.

But Verizon will still be CDMA. AT&T, and thus the iPhone, will still be GSM, so it doesn't matter that Verizon is opening up. It even says this in the article you linked:
Will I be able to buy the iPhone and use it on Verizon’s network?

Not in its current form. The iPhone runs on a GSM network; Verizon uses CDMA technology. Unless Apple Inc. comes up with a new CDMA phone, iPhone users will be out of luck.

And with AT&T having a 5 year exclusive contract on the iPhone, don't expect Apple to come up with that CDMA version any time soon.

But if you had done that then we would not have had the opportunity to look smart by posting to correct you. :D

When the iPhone first came out there was a guy here in NJ/NY that unlocked it and was using it on Verizon. He unlocked two iphones...kept one and sold the other one on eBay.

Wonder whatever happened.

Did you see him using it Verizon or did he just say that he was using it? It just doesn't seem very plausible that he got it working on Verizon as the technologies are fundamentally different.

I think it would be pretty much impossible without a major hardware and software overhaul. I'd call BS on that. If someone really could, they could probably make a business out of converting and selling them, or just charging to convert purchased phones.

You know what I'm thinking? The guy simply replaced the AT&T text in the top left with Verizon and is duping people into thinking he's running the phone on Verizon's network.

Plus the rest of the world (well, most of us anyway) use GSM almost exclusively, so I don't see it happening ever - Apple's just not into making multiple versions of the same thing.

It was on MSNBC news. It was big news, but never heard anything again about it.

Just like I heard several months ago that Verizon was going to start supporting other technologies, but nothing yet.

Could it be bull? I don't know.
