For some reason when i receive mail it only notifies my by displaying the number of emails i have received in numbers on top of the Mac Mail icon it never seems to the selected sound.

I have checked all the settings to make sure I didnt miss anything, my vol is turned up ect..

Anyone have any suggestions?

Its just annoying because im not always at my Mac to check the icon and i hate missing emails :(

I am also having the same problem. I have tiger and all mail sounds used to work perfectly--I'm not sure when they stopped. If I reboot the sounds will come back, but only for a short time. Does anyone have an answer??

Open up mail, go to preferences and than click on the general tab and make sure the new mail sound box is set to "New Mail Sound".

doesnt that defeat the purpose of having other sounds??

I just set mine back to "New Mail Sound"

I'll see if that works..

If so, can we not change the sound Mac Mail makes when we receive mail?

Sorry I did not realize that you had changed the sound, that's very strange that it is not making the sound and I apologize for not being able to help further.
