I'm an artist just trying to do some pixel work then I came across this issue. A programmer told me this problem came from improperly shutting off my external hard drive. (I used to save directly to it and it would from time to time randomly shut down).

My File: http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/4899/picture11vn8.png

When I open it in Photoshop: http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/9113/picture13jw9.png

When I open it in Notepad(Mini thumbnail is still there but file is empty):

I've tired many different name extensions(.jpeg,.psd,etc), I've tried sending (by email or chat) it to windows users and even rebooting into bootcamp (it becomes 0 bytes in windows) and the thumbnail (mini display picture) disappears!

Another programmer told me the problem can be resolved through thumbnail viewing though he doesn't know anything about Mac's and lead me here.

Solutions please? Thanks

I would try Graphic Converter. If that can't open it, then it's probably toast. If you don't have that app, post the file on a server somewhere and we/I can test it. As far as why it got corrupt, who knows....could be many reasons. Making sure you unmount an external drive before shutting it off is a wise thing.

Graphic Converter was actually able to open the file. But that's not how its supposed to look like. The file format is weird and everything.

Now what?

Well....now I would say, it's probably corrupt, and I don't think you can do much about that. I'm actually surprised it even opens.
Maybe someone else has an idea, but that's all I've got for ya..sorry.
